A web series is a collection of scripted or non-scripted multimedia videos, mostly in episodic form, that are posted on the Internet and are a subset of the web television medium, which first appeared in the late 1990s and gained traction in the early 2000s. An episode or "webisode" is a single instance of a web series programme, though the latter word is not often used.
Web series can be used on a variety of formats and devices, including personal computers, notebook computers, tablets, and smartphones. They are also available to watch on cable. At the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2013, Netflix earned the first Primetime Emmy Award nominations for original online-only web programming.
